South Africa is one rich country when it comes to racing especially in the endurance category. The endurance races history runs from the 60’s starting with the springbok and the international 9 hour series to the 80’s 1000 km races. The 90’s saw the introduction of the world sportscar event but currently it is only the racing fraternity that continues the tradition now on a regional level.
What fuels the historic endurance racing is the fact that South Africa is without an official calendar in terms of motor racing events. The proposed F1 event has been planned to happen in 2013 0r 20 14 but since the plans have not yet been made clear, the endurance race remains the sole interesting motor racing event in the foreseeable future. Since there can never be an instant calendar change in international events, South Africa can only look forward to a 2013 made better by the traditional endurance race organized by CCE (classic car events), an MSA registers promoter.
When it comes to infrastructure, South Africa can only depend on one circuit, Phakisa Raceway in Welkom. The circuit was built in the 90’s and has seen championship events held on it successfully but now remains underused due to little or no activity in this field.
On a lighter note the circuit is to be used soon with CCE’s plan to host the 6-hour endurance race that is expected to involve GT, saloon, and sports car. The event is planned to involve the mentioned cars from all categories and so far, the discussions between CCE and MSA (Motorsport South Africa) are promising as everything looks positive. The event dubbed “The African 6 Hour” is set to take place on 23rd February 2013 and as expected, involved parties are already planning ahead.
The race is a 50 car entry and the expected number is 250 competitors and crew members. This will boost the economy around Welkom as well as bring lost glory to the once famous area. The fact that all closed wheel circuit participants have been invited makes this an event of its kind where cars from the regional and national level will be racing for top honors all in the same event. All possible measures have been taken to ensure that international entries are attracted. As for race fans, they will have a chance to enjoy a good race and get to see the rulers in the world of motor racing.
The format of the race is already set. It is planned that the race will run for 6 hours starting at 2pm and end at 8pm local time. This is on Saturday the 23rd February 2013. For the winners, the prize giving ceremony will be on Sunday the 24th. Practice will be held on Friday and qualifying on Saturday early morning. There will be trophies for, index of performance, teams and class victories. The entry fee is R2000.00 for every vehicle with the limit being 60 cars. The organizer will be Classic Car Events with Phakisa facilities including Medical and administrative staff in full use to run this historic event.
