Car Review – Nissan Qashqai
What should you expect? A small, compact and practical SUV that is very reliable and has a classy interior.
Nissan Qashqai has won the hearts of many motorists, more than Nissan could have imagined. In 2006, they came up with a plan to design a family car that would not be reminiscent of the previous crossovers. This one would have a prolonged boot, adequate cabin space and plain looks. On the contrary, this hatchback is chunky and resembles a 4×4, although it is designed for driving around the city and the suburbs. It has fine lines and has some of the most unique body shapes on SUVs today.
What makes Nissan Qashqai the envy of many?
Design
The Qashqai looks sharp and neat. It looks like a classic when compared to its weirdly shaped sister Nissan Juke and its larger brother Nissan X-Trail. It displays a modern look from its gorgeously flowing front side. The grill area is covered by toughened plastic. The sides have sleek grooves and the back rises up beautifully.
The main goal of the manufacturer was to give the cabin a classy feel, which they have been able to achieve. However, the Qashqai cabin still falls between being radical and conservative. Then there is the NissanConnect system, which is smartphone based and it offers satellite navigation with traffic tracking, while allowing access to applications in the smartphone of the user.
Performance
If you are looking for a Nissan Qashqai, you have three engine options. The line-up includes 1.2-litre petrol, 1.5-litre diesel and the biggest is in the range of 1.6-litre diesel. One may wonder; on the viability of 1.2-litre engine, on a crossover, which seems larger and demanding. However, the 1.2-litre engine is turbocharged to provide more torque than the most preferred, 1.6-litre engine.
The 1.2-litre petrol engine is the most rewarding in the motorway. It produces minimal noise and its 140lb optimum torque, makes overtaking easier and fun. On the other hand, the diesel engines are great for many motorists, but in a frosty morning, they might become a challenge to start.
Interior features
Qashqai interior exudes classiness, elegance and comfort. Its front does not only show contemporary style, but it also gives attention to ergonomics and ease of handling. The seats are comfortable with adequate cushioning. In addition, the location, accessibility and functioning of the instruments and the switchgear resembles that of the Volkswagen group’s effectiveness.
There is also a significant increase in the wheelbase, which makes it easier for the passengers in the rear seat, to protect their kneecaps. Although the model is shorter, the roofline is not a major concern since the seats will recline. Other features include a spacious boot, Bluetooth connectivity and four trim levels.
Ease of handling
Concerning body control and stability around sharp corners, the Qashqai is awesome. It produces no noise on ignition and does not fidget when you drive on bumps and rough surfaces. The family hatchback steers straight and responds quickly to the wheel. The vehicle is well balanced.
Safety
ANCAP has given the Nissan Qashqai a 5-star rating on safety. The model features crash avoidance elements but if a crash occurs, it protects the occupants with its six air bags, that is two on the front, two on the sides and others in the side curtains.
Nissan Qashqai is an achievement for the company. It cuts its own niche among other models in relation to economy, ease of use and refinement. Of course, rivals such as Mazda CX-5 and Skoda Yeti have a lot to offer but they do not have the overall competence and the charm of the Qashqai.
